How To Keep My Quilt Inside The Cover (Foolproof Ways)
We all know the feeling: you've tossed and turned all night, unable to figure out why you can't get comfortable - only to find your quilt bunched up and half-way out your duvet cover come morning.
Despite your best efforts, you just can't seem to prevent it from happening - and it's starting to affect your sleep.
Well - believe it or not, we may have the answer for you. (and it might be a simpler fix than you'd imagined!)
Foolproof ways to keep your duvet from sliding
There are a number of factors that cause your duvet cover to slip off your quilt. Before you look into buying some anti-slip 'gadgets', it might be worth reading the following:
How long have you had your quilt?
Generally, we should look to replace our duvets and quilts semi-regularly (depending on their quality, fill, and how regularly they're used).
Lower quality quilts (often made with man-made fibres or synthetic fills) will need to be replaced more often - this is because the fill gets worn out more quickly and can start to separate and bunch.
This separation and bunching of fill is one of the main culprits when it comes to duvet covers sliding.
While this separation and bunching happens faster in lower quality quilts, it also happens to more expensive quilts of higher quality.
These are usually filled with natural materials - wool, or feather down.
If you've had a lower quality quilt for more than 2 years, we'd recommend replacing it. Similarly, if you've been using a higher quality quilt for more than 4 years, we'd recommend looking to replace it with a newer model.
How is your quilt constructed?
There have been some great advancements in how quilts are produced, reducing the tendency for bunching and duvet cover slipping. If you're looking to buy a new duvet or comforter, look for one that has a box construction.
That's where the duvet or duvet is divided into 'boxes' or pockets. This construction helps regulate air flow, promote hygiene, and prevent quilt cover slipping.
How are you putting on your quilt cover?
We know - everyone has their own unique way of putting on their duvet cover! Some people put the duvet inside, others prefer an inside out duvet cover method.
While there's no necessarily 'right' way to do it, the most important factor is making sure the inside corners align.
Making sure the corners of the duvet align with your comforter cover might sound like a no-brainer, but you'll be surprised how many people overlook it!
When putting on your duvet cover, make sure to grab the corner of the duvet and ensure that the outside corners are properly filled (that means all four corners!).
What is your duvet cover made from?
When it comes to fabric choice, not all are created equal.
Polyester, and other man-made and synthetic fibres, are notoriously slippery - increasing the chance of your duvet sliding out.
Natural fibres - such as cotton and linen - are more textured, and therefore provide more grip on comforters.
Fabric choice is an important factor when trying to ensure a good night's sleep, so make sure you're aware of the materials' qualities before you purchase.
Is your cover the right size for your duvet?
This may seem like a silly question, but definitely worth asking!
It's really important that your duvet cover and your quilt or comforter are the same size.
Buying different sizes can inadvertently happen, depending on where you buy your duvet and cover - America, for example, has different sizes to Australia.
Always check the sizing guide before purchase (as a Queen Size can be different from country to country!).
The case against safety pins
If after considering the above you're still at a loss - don't fear! We have further recommendations for you. Some of these methods may require a sewing machine and a little bit of patience -but it's worth it.
Firstly, do not be tempted to use safety pins!
Due to the weight of the material, they can spring apart and give you a nasty poke in the night - not what you want when you're trying to sleep!
They also make holes in the fabric of both your duvet and its cover - damaging them and making unsightly marks.
Instead, we suggest a few different methods: duvet straps, duvet clips, duvet grips, and velcro strips. Read on to figure out which one is best suited to you.
Duvet Straps
Straps are a traditional method of preventing your comforter slipping around inside your duvet cover.
This method involves attaching sew ties to the four corners of the duvet (preferably sewn on using a sewing machine, rather than pinned with a safety pin) as well as sew loops to the inside of the duvet cover.
Simply tie the inside corners to the outside corners, you help stop things slipping around.
Duvet Clips
Comforter clips are a newer invention, sold at many stores and easily found online.
Usually made from plastic, they attach to the outer layer and pinch the duvet cover and the duvet comforter together.
This helps the duvet cover stay in the right place - however, these pieces of plastic can look a little unsightly.
Duvet Grips
Similar to clips, duvet grips are usually made from plastic and can be found by searching online.
Depending on the size of the grip, they can attach to the sides of the bed frame, or be used in each corner in the same way a clip can.
By pinching the duvet and duvet cover together, they keep the comforter in place while you're sleeping.
Velcro Strips
If you're after something a little less visible, then you might want to try velcro. Attach a piece to each corner of your duvet, and each inside corner of your cover and align the pieces when you put your cover on your bed.
The velcro strips will grip and secure the corners of your duvet and duvet cover together and prevent slide.
What you decide to do is ultimately your choice! If you're style-conscious, you might go for the less visible options of a sew tie or velcro method.
If you'd rather do away with the possibility of slipping and bunching altogether, then a coverlet, blanket or bedspread might be the way to go (especially in the warmer months).
These quilted bedding options are like a duvet and cover in one - they're also easy to wash and store.
