How To Choose The Warmest Quilt For Winter

Today is the first day of Winter, and for many of us that means we're starting to feel the winter chill.

Perhaps you're already finding that your All Season Quilt is just not doing the job, or you're looking to invest in a new quilt to keep you cosy for the colder months.

Whatever your reason, we'll try and help you find the perfect quilt for your needs - whether that be feather quilts, a wool quilt, cotton quilt or microfibre quilt.

Which Quilt is Good for Winter?

As an Australian company, most of our customers don't experience nighttime winter temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius (lucky us!).

Wool quilts made from 100% Pure Australian Wool are our preferred choice for winter quilts for warmer climates as not only do they utilise one of Australia's best known products (wool), they're also naturally hypoallergenic - meaning that they're perfect for those who suffer from allergies.

Wool is also machine washable, meaning that your quilt is easy to keep clean and fresh.

As a natural material, Wool is breathable and cosy - making fluffy quilts that will regulate your body temperature and keep you warm all night.

Wool quilts come in a range of weights, which is based upon GSM - or Grams per Square Metre. The higher the GSM, the heavier and warmer the quilt.

If you're in a location where nighttime winter temperatures plummet below 0 degrees Celsius, you might want to think about investing in a heavier GSM - usually found in a down quilt or feather quilt.

As a rule of thumb, down and feather quilt fillings sourced from birds native to colder countries (like Northern Europe or Canada) have the highest warmth ratings.

A Goose Down Quilt is usually regarded as the best quilts for colder climates, however a feather or down quilt is harder to clean as they are not usually machine washable.

Are wool quilts warmer than feather quilts?

A quilt's actual warmth rating depends on a few things - not just the quilt filling.

Quilt weight is one of the best ways we can determine warmth rating, as this is determined by the number of grams per square metre.

The more filling that is within the square metre, the warmer the quilt. But the warmth rating is also determined by how the quilt is made.

A box construction quilt is considered the best quilt construction method, as the 'boxes' distribute the quilt filling evenly.

Quilts that do not use a box construction are often prone to 'bunching' - meaning that warmth can escape.

Generally, a down quilt is considered warmer, but if the down quilt is is poorly made or sparsely filled, it will not be as warm as a wool quilt that is well made and filled.

Our Australian Wool Quilt range comes in a variety of quilt weights, allowing you to choose the right quilt weight for you.

Hot sleepers might prefer a medium weight quilt for Winter, whereas a cold sleeper would prefer a heavy quilt.

All our Australian Wool Quilts use a box construction, are machine washable and are the preferred choice of allergy and asthma sufferers - due to their natural hypoallergenic qualities.

They are also cased in natural fibres for an extra soft feel.

Is 500gsm wool quilt warm?

Yes, a 500gsm Wool Quilt is considered warm. However, if you are a cold sleeper you may want to consider a higher GSM, or add extra layers (like flat sheets, blankets or coverlets) to ensure you get a comfortable night's sleep.

Should I choose Natural or Microfibre Quilt Fillings?

Natural materials make the best quilt filling, as they are breathable and able to regulate body temperature more effectively.

They also resistant to dust mites. Manmade or Microfibre Quilts are very cheap to make and generally used by those who prefer light quilts that can be used for all seasons.

Natural fill quilts carry a high warmth rating, but a good quality quilt made from natural fibre and fillings will also last longer and is therefore a more sustainable purchase.

Can I purchase a Winter Quilt from LUXOTIC?

Yes you can! We carry a range of quilts to suit both hot sleepers and cold sleepers; summer quilts and winter quilts.

We use a more simple warmth rating: Warm, Warmer & Warmest. All our quilts are machine washable and are filled with 100% Australian Wool sourced from Aussie Farmers using a box construction.
